Wish: Jonathan wished to be admired and loved by people rather than feared and shunned for his looks. Unfortunately for him his wish was granted. He was made to be a side show freak and sit in front of gawking onlookers who did indeed admire him for his looks, but not in the way that he had desired. Instead the people paid to see his disfigurement rather than look past them to the man himself. The already depressed Merrick fell further into self-loathing and sadness. Even worse, he was forced to relive this torment every night, every performance. It was absolute torture and horror for him. But his rare disease was incredibly valuable in drawing in spectators, and even though magcargos are naturally blessed with longevity, he would be kept alive even longer by the twisted carousel. Living in his constant nightmare Jonathan begged Mr. Darkrai to be free of this torment. Whatever deal he made with the devilish ringleader of this carnal carnival ride from hell is unknown… but to this day Jonathan still sits before thralls of gawkers gathered to revel in his pain.

Personality: Jonathan is reclusive and quiet, often lost in his own thoughts, but does enjoy the company of others. He tries to feel like he actually belongs somewhere with real people. The best he is able to do is to get along with some of the other carnies. At least there is some kinship in shared misery, and there’s plenty to go around. He is a caring soul who reciprocates kindness as best he is able. However when it comes to confrontation Jonathan is quick to cower away. Even though his shell is thick his skin seemingly is not. He can take the hits but does not dish them out and his feelings can easily be trampled upon. A born follower he rarely sticks up for himself or for others. But if he has learned anything over the decades it’s that patience is one of few things that can get him by, and so he tries to be as patient as he can, given his circumstances.

History: Born just outside of Lavaridge Town in the Fiery Path, Jonathan Merrick grew up the poor child of a cobbler. Even at a young age it was evident that something was not quite right with the boy. Even given the natural plasticity of his kind, Jonathan exhibited odd growths of rock while still a slugma. His parents took notice of this but could not derive much concern for it as when he evolved he would have a large shell of rock. However, when Jonathan did finally evolve into a magcargo, he did not come out of it looking as one would expect. The normally domed and uniform shell of a typical magcargo was deformed. In fact it even seemed to have spread to several parts of his body abnormally, indeed giving him horrible disfigurements. His head seemed to swell with rocky formations as did his right arm, and both of his legs were substantially enlarged and calcified as well. His shell formed a massive hunch which impaired his gate, causing the teen to have a permanent limp. His right arm continued to grow more calcified as he grew, eventually making it essentially useless to him. This in itself was a difficulty because he had been right handed. It forced him to become left handed, which was difficult enough but given his added predicaments it was only more difficult. His arm’s new size in addition to the growths on his head and back made wearing shirts effectively impossible as well. Luckily being a fire type staying warm was not an issue, but putting himself on constant display was. All of these malformations slowly graded on the boy’s psyche and he developed a severe depression which never really improved.
Naturally his parents were mortified, and even if they could afford a doctor, there was simply no treatment for his affliction. There was nothing they could do to help him, and the next few years were spent learning to live with their son’s condition. It was difficult for the family to adjust to their son. Extra care was needed to help him in every day affairs. His father even had to arrange a special bed to allow the boy to sleep upright so he would not suffocate under the weight of his own head. However, it was not long after that, that Jonathan’s mother fell ill from an infection and passed away. Jonathan’s father took it especially hard. Living with a hermit of a son and having lost the love of his life he resorted to heavy drinking. The binging turned into an addiction and pretty soon the old cobbler was not much more than a drunken bum. Left with no one to really care for or support him Jonathan was forced to try to find any work he could, and that left him with only one option. A side show freak. When he heard about Circus Darkrai was to be arriving in Lava Ridge he reluctantly went to look for work. When he met Mr. Darkrai however and the man had told him he could grant wishes, Jonathan’s heart found a reason to be excited again. However, no one had ever told him that wishes always have a price, and in his case the price was steep. Steeper than he could have ever dreamed.

Likes: He likes to read, it’s one of the few escapes he has from the stares. He often reads on stage, trying to shut out of the looks of horror and disbelief. And despite fearing the rejection of others, he loves company. Anyone that shows him kindness he remembers, and tries his best to repay that kindess.

Dislikes: The sideshow, sitting on display to be gawked at by thralls of paying spectators, he takes it as a personal hell. He absolutely hates it, it fills him with great depression and sadness and only sends him into further self-loathing of his appearance.
